Experience the beauty of southern Africa as you travel around one of the liveliest and emerging continents on the planet. Explore South Africa, Swaziland and Mozambique, each unique in terms of culture, tradition and landscape but each as equally enchanting and fascinating.

You will visit South Africa, the ‘Rainbow Nation’, and cultural melting pot set within a breathtaking ancient landscape. Its wide, sandy beaches, cosmopolitan cities and famous wildlife and game reserves will certainly leave you craving more. Mozambique is similarly stunning with pristine coastline, beautiful terracotta tiled towns and a wealth of habitat for an incredible range of exotic wildlife. All this alongside a long cultural heritage - an impressive amalgamation of Portuguese, Asian and indigenous origins and traditions - making Mozambique a truly unique destination. Swaziland will be your final stop, despite its small size a unique haven where an ancient monarchy rules a land of amiable people with bountiful and striking national parks and diverse ecosystems. Lying at the heart of southern Africa, Swaziland is known for its special mystique created by the traditional way of life and extreme friendliness of its people.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Behold the natural wonders of three of the most southern countries of the African continent as you spend 7 days exploring South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland.

Itinerary

Day One & Two – St Lucia, South Africa

Your adventure will begin in the small town of St Lucia where you will have time to relax before taking an evening cruise on the Lake St Lucia estuary and have the chance to spot hippos and crocodiles in the serene, peaceful estuarine waters.

Wake early the next morning and see the sun emerging over the African landscape. You will head to the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park for a full day safari – home to the Big 5 and as a result of conservation efforts now the largest population of white rhino in the world.

Day Three & Four - Mozambique

Enjoy the scenic drive through the South of Maputaland, a unique and beautiful bushland ecosystem, into the land of sunshine – Mozambique. You will take a transfer over the sand dunes to the stunning Indian Ocean where you will spend two nights. Join an expedition to swim with wild dolphins, laze on the beach, snorkel, swim, surf, try piri-piri prawns and sip a cocktail or local beer at Pinto’s beach bar.

Day Five & Six - Swaziland

After a leisurely start you will cross the border into the beautiful, landlocked kingdom of Swaziland. Your final destination is Mlilwane Nature Reserve, a reserve that is a true pioneer in community orientated conservation and home to many endangered species located near the city of Manzini. During your two days here you will have the opportunity to horse ride, hike, swim in natural warm springs, visit craft markets and take in Swazi dancing, cultural tours, art exhibitions, galleries, as well as experiencing great food.

Day Seven – Durban

On your final morning, wave goodbye to the mountains of Swaziland, the ocean in Mozambique and the animals in Zululand and head back to King Shaka International for your onward flight. On your way out of Durban be sure to request a window seat and look down onto the Ukhahlamba Park to get a final glimpse of the enchanting and striking landscape from the air.

*Please note that activities listed in the Fast Facts section are included in the price. Some activities may require you to pay extra, so please remember to bring enough money to cover these costs.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will fly into Durban airport (King Shaka International airport) the day before your trail is due to depart. You will then be picked up from your hostel early in the morning on the project start date by a friendly project representative ready to begin your adventure. On the drive down to St Lucia you will have plenty of opportunity to meet your fellow travellers and chat about the adventure that awaits you!

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

For the duration of your trail you will stay in a variety of hostels with your fellow travellers. The accommodation will be simple but of course clean and comfortable all with the basic facilities that you will need during your stay.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with a basic breakfast each day consisting of cereal with yoghurt and fruit. You will be responsible for sourcing all other meals, which presents a great opportunity for you to explore local restaurants and sample local delicacies with your fellow travellers. In Swaziland you will have the chance to cook a Swazi bush braai for yourselves, which you can eat on the outside veranda overlooking stunning views of Mlilwane wildlife sanctuary.

Flights

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
