WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You will be supporting staff at a local hospital or clinic in the city of La Ceiba. Your time may be spent shadowing or working alongside healthcare worker or directly with patients.  You may even be required to provide assistance with a variety of technical and administrative support as required.

Your internship will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine and is geared towards those who wish to pursue a career within a medical field.  Those with determination, enthusiasm and aptitude may be able to assist the doctors, nurses and lab staff in their duties and gain hands-on experience of administering care to the Honduran people, however please be aware that your involvement is completely dependent upon your own skills and experience and the needs of the hospital / clinic at the time of your placement.

The centrally located hospital receives a wide range of patients with a multitude of ailments whereas the  clinic, situated in the suburban area of La Ceiba, was founded for young people up to the age of 19, who attend for help and advice on such matters as pregnancy, SOA tests and psychological problems.  The most successful volunteers are those who can be flexible, proactive and enthusiastic about helping out where they are needed most.

Your day will be divided into volunteering at the Health Centre and partaking in Spanish lesson’s at the Central American Spanish School. This provides a great opportunity to brush up on your Spanish whilst working in the clinic where you will need it!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

There are two options for arriving into Honduras, either to fly into San Pedro Sula or direct to La Ceiba. If you fly into La Ceiba you will be collected from the airport by a friendly local staff member, who will then escort you to your home in La Ceiba, a port town on the north coast of Honduras, where you will live for the duration of your stay.  If you are arriving into San Pedro Sula you will then make your way to La Ceiba via bus, detailed instructions for which will be provided prior to your departure.  If you choose the San Pedro Sula option please aim to arrive no later than 2pm in order to make the last bus.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying with a friendly Honduran host family, allowing you to completely immerse yourself in the culture and language of Honduras as you will be living just like a local! You will have a private room and bathroom facilities will be available. Your host family will be welcoming and friendly and will try to make you feel like a member of the family.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day. These meals will be typical Honduran dishes consisting of beans, rice, tortillas, meat, cheese and eggs. Food can also be obtained at local supermarkets. Sample some of the country's local food such as meaty tortillas, fried beans, and papaya.

Flights

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact Frontier’s dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
