Imagine flooded rice fields, dense tropical forests, towering limestone karsts, awesome plateaus, rugged mountains and sweeping plains. Marvel at rivers flowing far and wide through lush landscapes before breaking into spectacular cascades of light. In the streets of Luang Prabang, (Laos second city and a world heritage site), discover ancient sun-baked monastery walls, monks clothed in traditional ochre robes and street markets imbued with the scents and aromas of exotic spices and rare oils.

Explore the French-influenced capital of Vientiane, bordered by the Mekong River, with its unique blend of bustling metropolis and chilled out riverside haunts. Wander through the streets and alleys absorbing the singular atmosphere and taking in the novel and fascinating sights; from the fantastic sculpture garden of Buddha Park to ancient temples made of wood, stone, bronze and silver. Venture beyond the city walls: explore floating restaurants on Nam Ngum Lake; trek or tuk-tuk in the mountainous region of Luang Namtha and steam off afterwards with a herbal sauna and soothing massage; scramble through the limestone caves of Vang Vieng and the Buddha inhabited caves of Tham Nong Pafa.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

This project is keen to attract enthusiastic, creative, easy going, flexible and adaptable volunteers to help with the education of the children in the community. The local people love welcoming and interacting with overseas volunteers and feel that the longer a volunteer can stay the better it is for the class and the community!

The project has nearly finished building one school and the community hopes to extend their construction efforts across the wider community.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your teaching programme will run five days a week for an hour or two each day. You'll be teaching conversational English and the curriculum provided in either a school or community centre. English lessons carry on through the school holidays allowing the project to operate throughout the year. Your class will be made up of different ages and competencies, so imaginative and creative lesson planning is key! For example why not try to use music and song in your lesson to help the less confident students to join in?

As well as teaching you will also have the opportunity to fill up the rest of your days taking part in other valuable projects currently running on the farm, this could involve anything from organic farming, sustainable building, feeding baby animals such as goats and piglets or even helping out at the fruit shack!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You'll be flying into the busy capital city, Vientiane. From here there are local buses several times a day for you to take to the project site 150 km away. Detailed travel instructions for this straight forward journey will be provided in your field brief.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

The accommodation may be either in a volunteer house or a home stay on or near the project site. If you are placed a short distance from the site you can walk to work, hire bicycles or jump on one of the local tuk-tuks! Rooms at the house are mixed sex though single sexed rooms may be available on request, dependant on availability. The toilets are Western style and showers are available. Clothes washing facilities may be provided for a small charge.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with either two or three meals a day (this depends on the site where you will be working). Your diet will consist of a variety of nutritious and delicious local dishes. There is bottled water onsite and local shops to buy alcohol... though of course there is no drinking during working hours!

Flights

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
