Women's Empowerment Project in Costa Rica

Participate in our Women’s Empowerment Project whilst living in the surroundings of beautiful Costa Rica

Prices from US$695

Nestling between its tropical Caribbean and Pacific coasts, Costa Rica is one of the most breath-taking countries in the world. Travel to this tropical paradise and contribute in Women’s Empowerment initiatives. By doing so, you will integrate into the local community which will leave you in love with the people, landscapes and wildlife that this magical destination has to offer.
Taking part in Costs Rica’s Women’s Empowerment Project and participating in sustainable and meaningful activities, will be a fulfilling experience that will stay with you throughout your life. You will develop skills in working with women and children in local communities, directly impacting future generations, which will in turn beat issues such as unemployment and poverty.
Over 62 million girls around the world are not in school and over a third of women have experienced physical or sexual violence. These two statistics directly correlate to each other as women who are illiterate or lack education, become victims of poverty and abuse. Educated girls are statistically shown to marry later and have fewer children, subsequently decreasing infant mortality rates and increasing numbers of girls in education. The poverty cycle can be broken by also helping to develop the tools and skills women need to earn an income and raise their families out of poverty. Through supporting women, raising awareness and educating local communities on the benefits of equal opportunities, women will lead and raise future generations to be independent and successful.

What does the project do?
The project has recently been set up to fight the global issue of equal opportunities. It’s a critical issue that needs to be addressed and your participation on our project will make a difference. You will help put in place lasting schemes that will empower women for generations to come, creating a positive impact on local communities.
What will I be doing?
Your work schedule will be challenging, varied and sometimes unpredictable but always enjoyable and fulfilling. There is a range of different initiatives to be put in place to make a lasting difference in the local communities. Activities will include educational enhancement through building communication skills and encouraging decision-making roles. Basic entrepreneurial and social enterprise competencies will equip women in their progression to employability and becoming independent.  You may also be teaching some English classes, basic healthcare, assisting in CV writing workshops and conducting interview practice.
You will benefit in terms of your personal and professional experience and will be encouraged to formulate ideas and develop your teaching skills and techniques. Working with the locals and our Frontier team, you will be working one on one or with small groups. You may be asked to share your ideas and be asked to plan your own tasks and activities for your small group. Your level of involvement will obviously depend on the length of your stay as well as your existing skills and qualifications.
This project runs five days a week so you will have weekends off to explore further afield and enjoy the beautiful scenery and all that Costa Rica has to offer.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
You will be greeted at the local Airport in Puerto Jimenez by a Frontier staff member and walk 15 minutes to the Frontier house. Please arrange to arrive on Sunday afternoon.
There are two airlines which fly to Puerto Jimenez, Sansa and Natureair or if you're up for it there is also a bus service from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez. Your Project Coordinator can give you further information about this bus journey. You may have to organise your own transport back to the airport after you have completed your project depending on your project end date, which is very straight forward and the Project Coordinator can help you with this.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
You will be staying in the Frontier house in Puerto Jimenez close to the local community. Your accommodation will be in a shared room and will be basic but clean, tidy and comfortable. If you would prefer, you can upgrade to local hostel accommodation for an additional fee of $50 per week.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?
Costa Rican food is simple but delicious, with a focus on rice, beans and good quality fruit and vegetables. You will be provided with a food budget for the school week leaving your weekends free for you to enjoy reasonably priced meals in local bars and restaurants around town or trying out street stalls. You can get creative learning how to make gallo pinto, the staple food of the nation, which is fried rice and black beans or other favourites such as crispy tortillas stuffed with delicious cheeses, vegetables and every now and then some diced meat.
On account of the lush nature of Costa Rica's natural habitats, the range of fresh fruit and vegetables is vast and abundant, so make sure you sample some of the fresh market produce. Another thing to try is some Costa Rican coffee, famous the world over and representing the country's biggest export, its fragrant aroma synonymous with the lush plantations found in Central America. And don't forget the rum!
