Learn Spanish in Santiago de Chile

Improve your Spanish language skills, and engage fully in the Latin American culture, by living and studying in Chile’s capital city.

Prices from US$945

At 4,270km long and only 177km wide, Chile stretches along South America, running continuously from the centre of the continent down to its southern most tip. The thin strip of land covers around the same distance as from London to Baghdad and boasts an incredible diversity of landscapes, with the world’s driest desert in the North and ice plains in the South. Additionally an extraordinarily endemic temperate rainforest can be found in central Chile bordered by the snow-capped Andes to the east and stunning Pacific Ocean beaches to the West.

Situated in central Chile is the cosmopolitan capital city, Santiago. It is a destination of choice for many travellers as its mild climate allows easy enjoyment of everything the city has to offer all year round, and you certainly won’t be short of options. The capital is filled with hillside parks, museums, rooftop bars, small markets and beautiful old colonial style buildings. You can also experience the city’s buzzing nightlife and vibrant arts scene, not to mention the exploding food scene in Santiago, earning the capital city the title of ‘The next great food city’ in The Good Taste Awards.

You will have the opportunity to improve your Spanish language skills, and engage fully in the Latin American culture, by living and studying in Chile’s capital city. Whilst there, you’ll be immersed in an enjoyable and effective language programme, catered to your level of proficiency and taught by university educated professionals. You’ll also have lots of opportunities to engage in cultural activities and attend excursions to local beaches, coastal cities or even ski slopes during your afternoons and weekends.

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. The main purpose of the course is to allow you to develop your Spanish language skills whilst interacting with the locals, experiencing the cuisine and admiring the beautiful landscape of Chile, for a full cultural experience. The lessons you take at the language school are just one element of the experience you will have whilst studying abroad. Immersed in the centre of South America you will gain invaluable Spanish practice as you communicate in everyday scenarios whilst exploring and experiencing all that Latin America has to offer.

On your first day you will take a short test and be allocated into a class appropriate to your current language level. There are courses suitable for all levels from complete beginner to advanced speakers, with each of these levels sub-divided into smaller groups. Each class has a maximum of nine students and is taught by an experienced university educated teacher. It is a friendly and informal setting to learn Spanish and activities such as karaoke are offered to break the ice among students!

You will have 20 classes per week, 45 minutes in length, with refreshment breaks between. Classes run from 10.00 to 13.30 allowing you the afternoons to explore or enjoy free cultural activities offered by the language school. You may watch a movie, learn Chilean dances or help prepare a traditional Chilean dish.

A member of staff from our local partner organisation in Santiago will meet you on arrival at Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport and take you to your home stay accommodation.

Please arrive on the Sunday to allow you time to relax and settle in before your course starts on the Monday.

You will be staying with a local Chilean host family, giving you the opportunity to practice your newly improved Spanish skills. You will have a private bedroom, with access to shared facilities, including the kitchen where you can employ your new Chilean cooking skills.

Breakfast and dinner will be provided by your host family, which will give you the chance to taste traditional Chilean cuisine, which has a strong European influence. Be sure to try Pastel de Choclo (a corn casserole with meat stuffing), Empanadas (pastry filled with meat, cheese or mussels) and Cazuela (a homemade stew with beef, chicken, corn, rice and potatoes). You might also like to impress your hosts with some classic recipes from home.

You can take a packed lunch to the language school, return to your accommodation and prepare food, or enjoy a meal in a local restaurant with fellow students.
