Help to cook and serve meals at a food shop established to provide cheap and healthy meals for the poor.

Prices from US$895

After emerging from years of conflict and war, Vietnam has now become a permanent fixture on many a wanderer's bucket list and attracts millions of visitors annually. It is a diverse country, both geographically and demographically. From the chilly and lush jungle-clad mountain peaks of the north and the unique, traditional tribes that occupy them to the vast marshes and waterways of the mighty Mekong delta in the south, there is much to experience throughout Vietnam.

Traditionally the economy in Vietnam has been rooted in agriculture and rice production, and though this is still a very important part of the economy, Vietnam has transformed itself into one of the fastest growing and most diverse economies in Southeast Asia with the expansion of manufacturing and tourism. However, despite rapid industrialization and modernization, food insecurity remains an important public health issue in large urban areas of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City in particular. The quantity of food available is not the only issue, as people also face difficulties accessing nutritionally valuable food. Access to essential foods such as fruit may be compromised because of financial difficulties, which often leads to poorer health outcomes.

What does the project do?

The food shop was established in order to provide cheap and healthy meals to the many people in Ho Chi Minh who live in poverty due to poor education and lack of employment opportunities. The shop caters to the elderly, workers with insufficient incomes, disabled people, poor students and children who come for the cheap, good quality and hygienic meals every day. The food shop relies on donations and the hard work of locals who work everyday to cook and serve approximately 500 meals.

What will I be doing?

On this project you will be working alongside a dedicated team of locals. You will help to prepare, cook and serve meals so that the poorer community of Ho Chi Minh can be provided with hygienic, healthy food at low cost.

You should arrive into HCMC Airport (SGN) on the Sunday where you will be met by local staff and transferred to the project site. Once you have had time to rest the staff will give you a local orientation. Your in-country coordinator will help you acclimatise and you’ll feel at home in no time in this stunningly vibrant country.

You will be staying in shared volunteer dorms. The dorms are located on a college campus, though the rooms are reserved for volunteers only. There is hot water and western style showers and patchy WiFi available, dependent on weather. Welcome to Vietnam!

On your project you will be provided with three meals per day which are served in a restaurant on campus. Meals are typically Vietnamese; traditional Vietnamese cooking is known for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil, plentiful use of herbs and vegetables. Typical meals may include rice vermicelli noodles, jasmine rice, dried shrimp and bean sprouts however meals may include some Western dishes such as sandwiches, spaghetti and bread. Did we mention rice?
