What will I be doing?

Culture Week:

This program offers a great opportunity for you to learn and understand more about Philippines culture and to become more familiar with your surroundings in and around Palawan. It is an enriching and important experience to get to know the local culture and customes before embarking on a bigger adventure.  The week acts as an introduction to Palawan and the Filipino culture, but is also a great platform for meeting locals and new friends as well. You will experience, Philippine culture, Philippine language and have a taste of some authentic Philippine food through some cooking classes. During this week you will visit all the famous sites around our centre that shouldn’t be missed. You will also have time to engage with local people, taste the food and learn about Philippine customs and culture first hand with locals.

Community Week:

This program offers the unique opportunity to work alongside the local villagers of Palawan in their authentic professions: fishing and agriculture. You will assist the local villagers by joining them in their fishing practices and by working in the fields/plantations, which will give you an extraordinary insight into the livelihood of the people of Palawan and their culture and customs. Fishing and farming are the main professions in Palawan. On this project you will gain an insight into this traditional way of life through assisting local villagers with their jobs. You may go out fishing, repair fishing tools or make fish products such as salted fish. On land you may help to plant rice and vegetables, cut rice and assist with other farming chores. The particular activities carried out will depend a lot on the weather and the season at that point in time.

Teaching Week:

This project aims to help children on Palawan develop their English language skills. The children love to practise and study the English language with people from all over the world and learn about different cultures at the same time. By improving childrens English skills and developing their understanding of the world you will help to increase the opportunities available in their future education and working career. During this project you will gain an insight into the Philippine education system through assisting in a local school and helping the children of Palawan to improve their English language skills. The local community are not always able to support their children to a high level of education and children do not have many opportunities to practise English with skilled English speakers. As such you can make a really valuable contribution to the local by giving English classes. You will teach practical English in a fun and engaging way through various activities such as songs, games, sports and conversation exercises.

Beach Week:

This project aims to provide a relaxing environment and base for those looking to relax and explore the beautiful town and beaches of El Nido on the Philppine island of Palawan. On this project you will have plenty of free time to explore El Nido and the island of Palawan as you wish. The program includes a day’s kayaking trip and a traditional Filipino massage. As well as relaxing on picturesque beaches there are plenty of other activities for you to try including snorkelling, diving, exploring caves and waterfalls.

What happens when I arrive?

You will fly into Puerto Princesa International airport on the Sunday where you will be met by a friendly in-country representative and transfer to the project site.

Where will I be staying?

You will be staying in shared accommodation in the volunteer guesthouse. There are shared bathrooms with cool showers and western-style toilets. There is WIFI on site and the rooms are fan-cooled with locks on the doors and linen provided. There are also various public transport options nearby and other optional activities to take part in.

What will I be eating?

Throughout your stay you will be provided with three meals a day. The meals will mainly consist of local Philippine cuisine so expect to be eating lots of vegetables, rice, egg and meat. Did we mention rice? Philippine cuisine has developed from an exciting variety of influences including Malay, Spanish, Chinese and American, thanks to its trade and seafaring history. Other Asian and Latin dishes have also been adapted to incorporate local ingredients, providing you with a vast range of dishes to sample and enjoy. Popular dishes include a whole roasted pig, traditional Philippine sausage, omelettes, braised chicken and pork and a variety of seafood to name just a few.

Additional Opportunities

There’s plenty to explore on Palawan in your free time or before/ after your project. The island is fringed with beautiful beaches so why not relax on the beach, go diving or snorkelling, go kayaking or try out other water based activities. Coron Bay is found at the northwest of Palawan (between Busuanga and Culion islands) and is known for being one of the best wreck diving locations in the world. On land there is also much to explore from pretty coastal villages to inland waterfalls.  The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is located 50km north of the city of Puerto Princesa and has recently been voted one of the new 7 wonders of nature. Your in-country coordinators will be able to help you arrange any additional activities.
