Florida Animal Rescue

Help to provide the day to day care for a range of rescued wild animals at this beautiful sanctuary in the heart of Florida.

Prices from US$2,195

Florida, nicknamed the sunshine state, is one of the world’s most beautiful destinations, bustling with friendly people and exotic wildlife. There is a wide variety of things to do and see, with its white sandy beaches, subtropical wilderness, and of course, the home of some of the world’s most famous theme parks. Millions of people visit Florida each year to experience the Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States. Here visitors have the chance to see the diverse and exotic wildlife that resides there, including over 30 of the world’s endangered or threatened species like the West Indian Manatee, American Alligator and the Everglades Snail Kite.

Join this extraordinary project and help to provide a better life for the many rescued animals including big cats, wolves, bears, primates, and bats. The centre rescues wild animals that are held in inappropriate captive situations and greatly mistreated. This sanctuary provides a safe haven for these animals where they are given an enriching and secure environment. Additionally you may also get the amazing opportunity to work alongside the State of Florida in the rehabilitation and release of orphaned wild black bear cubs. The centre releases all black bears that come into their care back into the wild as soon as they are strong enough.

The Florida Animal Rescue Sanctuary is a refuge for animals that have been saved from a lifetime of mistreatment and neglect. Without this refuge, these animals would lead miserable lives. This fantastic project aims to provide them with the best possible care in an environment as close to their natural habitat as possible. Your participation on this project will be a tremendous help and will greatly improve the efforts of the sanctuary in reaching its goals of improving the lives of many animals.

Working alongside local staff, volunteers help with the day to day care of the animals and the education of the sanctuary’s visitors. You will be involved in every aspect of the running of the centre, including feeding the animals and preparing the food, cleaning, building and repairing the enclosures, and also making enrichments and feeding platforms. Volunteer contact with the animals is carefully monitored as the safety of both animals and the volunteers is paramount.

Upon arrival at Orlando International Airport you will need to make your own way to the project location. The easiest option for this is by car. Alternatively, an airport pick up and drop off service can be arranged for you at an additional cost of $100.

During your programme you will be staying in a volunteer house in single sex, shared rooms close to the sanctuary. You will have full use of a fully fitted kitchen with all of the basic amenities, and also have access to wifi, a telephone to make domestic calls and a tv/dvd player.

You will have to prepare your own meals from the array of fresh ingredients that will be available to you. These generally consist of fresh meat, vegetables and fruit, dairy products and common dietary staples such as rice and pasta. If you enjoy cooking, this will provide you with a great opportunity to share your culinary talents and prepare meals for you and your fellow volunteers.

Please be aware that you will have to let your Volunteer Advisor know if you have any special diet needs when booking your placement.

There are many places to visit and things to do but public transport can be hard to come by in the area. If you are able to drive this gives you a chance to explore even further than the local area.

Why not take a trip before or after your time at the Rescue Sanctuary to explore the largest Subtropical wilderness in the United States – The Everglades National Park? Encompassing 1.5 million acres of important habitat for rare and threatened wildlife, you will have the choice of a range of different activities and ways to explore this amazing area (e.g. hiking, canoeing, biking, tram and boat tours). Alternatively, you might like to take a trip to the serene city of Crystal River, located on the West coast and known to many as the ‘Home of the manatee’. Here you can choose to go on an Eco boat ride to see the manatees in their natural habitat or get up close and personal with these tranquil creatures by kayaking or snorkelling with them.
