WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Frontier Indonesia Elephant Sanctuary is the perfect opportunity for keen individuals to participate in the hands-on care of charismatic Sumatran elephants amidst the Sumatran rainforests with the help of local elephant handlers. The project aims to educate travellers of the beauty of the Sumatran elephants and rain forest to generate outside support and contribute towards conserving these important animals and their habitats. This project will be hard work, which means it will be equally rewarding and a life changing experience.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Once you have taken in your new environment and have settled in to your new home, you will be given a briefing session about which activities to expect from your project as well as information regarding elephant behaviour and management.

Your duties will involve helping the in-country staff wash and feed the elephants as well as planting elephant grass for the elephants to eat. You may also have the chance to join the in-country staff on elephant patrols through the Sumatran jungle where you can learn about elephant life and elephant husbandry.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival at Medan, Kuala Namu Airport you will be greeted by a friendly representative of Frontier who will transfer you to your project location.  The in-country staff will then help you quickly get into the swing of things.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in a volunteer house throughout the duration of your project where the living conditions will be basic but comfortable including shared common areas and a western style toilet.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day during the duration of your project. Food will be your usual Indonesian fare, its trademark being a fusion of Indonesian and Chinese style. Some of the most popular dishes you can expect are Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice with a fried egg on top) and Mi Goreng (fried noodles with egg). Another Indonesian favourite is Satay (spicy marinated thin slices of meat, threaded onto a skewer, barbecued, and served with a spicy peanut sauce).
