Volunteer with Children in Mexico

Immerse yourself in the Caribbean way of life whilst making an invaluable contribution to the lives of some of the poorest children in the astonishing Mexico.

Prices from US$1,695

With its white sandy beaches, beautiful scenery, warm sunny weather and rich ancient history Mexico has become a world renowned travel destination. Situated in Central America, bordering the United States to the north and Guatemala to the south, Mexico is a rapidly changing country hosting both ancient Mayan and Aztec routes and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. The Frontier-Mexico project gives you the opportunity to experience life in this warm and friendly country as you help empower children and provide a safe and fun environment for them to learn and play away from the hardships children face in impoverished areas.

Many parents in this part of Mexico have to work long hours to provide for their families and the centre you will be placed in offers a relief for these families, enabling the children to spend time with positive adult role models as well as have the opportunity to not only learn but simply play with their peers. Children here might have been victims of aggression or are at risk of being left alone for large parts of the day so your care and attention will be gratefully received.

Not only will you spend time teaching and looking after the children, you will also have the opportunity learn about Mexican culture as you immerse yourself in the Caribbean way of life. Alongside volunteers and travellers from all over the world you will have the chance to not only make a difference ein the lives of these children but your own as well, and walk away with memories for life.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The project is committed to ensuring that children are safe and know their rights, aiming to empower them to achieve a bright future. You will be helping the project protect children who might have been affected by abuse, abandonment or the drugs trade. Through varied and fun tasks you will be able to assist in teaching the children vital life skills and how to be safe should they come into contact with these kinds of threats in the future.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

This is a varied program where you will have the opportunity to provide homework help for the children, helping with reading and writing in English as well as support them in their endeavours to complete tasks set out by teachers in varied subjects. You will also get involved in the overall running of the centre, including all from delivering health and safety sessions to the general tidying up that follow the fun! All the while you will have in country staff providing you with close supervision, while playing games with the children and offering them a safe and fun environment where they can enjoy the time they spend learning with their friends. You will generally work in the mornings with the afternoons free to plan the next day’s activities or perhaps take a language lesson to improve your Spanish skills. You might be needed to come back certain afternoons if the local staff need help with their evening classes so remember to be flexible.

Your teaching week will be Monday to Friday giving you the weekend free to explore Mexico’s exciting culture, beaches and sites further. Check out the extras page for ideas about what you could get up to in your free time!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

If you arrive into Cancun International Airport the Friday before your project start date, local staff will be at the airport between 2- 6pm to take you to your pre-project accommodation. If are arriving before you will be asked to make your own way to the project on Saturday morning.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in basic, safe and comfortable accommodation in a shared volunteer house or flat in the lively beach town of Playa Del Carmen. The accommodation will have running water and warm showers. Living conditions will be standard to basic Mexican life style so be prepared for a true Mexican experience!

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Food will be provided at the volunteer accommodation where you will also be expected to prepare meals for yourself and your fellow volunteers. The Mexican diet generally consists of rice, pasta, meat and vegetables but fruit, pancakes and eggs are also common. Being known as the home of popular dishes like fajitas, burritos and enchiladas, Mexico is not just your one trick pony - a wide variety of dishes are just as delicious! Why not try pickled vegetables, gorjitas (savoury corn cakes) or pozole (a light Mexican soup) to name a few. Playa Del Carmen has a range of eating opportunities from cheap street food to upmarket restaurants if you want to take a break from cooking and treat yourself to some Mexican delicacies or American/European meals

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

In your free time why not see what other exciting opportunities Mexico has to offer by exploring Yucatan and beyond. You could visit the beautiful island of Cozumel or Akumel Bay and swim alongside turtles and other marine life in the incredible corals and temperate sea water. You could also take a trip to the cenotes and experience the underwater river systems or travel to Rio Lagartos and see the flamingo and crocodile populations. For those after more cultural experience you should take the opportunity to travel to the world famous Chichen Itza or Tulum and immerse yourself in ancient Mayan traditions and legends.

If you decide to stay a bit longer in Mexico after your placement you could even venture into the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve and wonder through the tropical forests or visit the hidden city of Morelia or the island of Espíritu Santo and kayak with whale sharks and sea lions. To the South there are the countries of Guatemala and Belize for those who want to extend their travels into South America.
