A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. You may also be able to gain a CoPE to support your university application. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

The Frontier-Kenya Physiotherapy Internship is based in Malindi on the beautiful Kenyan coastline. This project is best suited to school leavers, undergraduate students or qualified professionals looking to embark upon a career or higher education studies within the field of physiotherapy. You will be based at the local district hospital, which will enable you to gain the most exposure from your placement. The placement will allow you to observe relevant skills and practices as well as giving you the opportunity to take part in the day to day running of various hospital departments. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may even be able to assist the therapists in their duties and gain hands on experience in administering physiotherapy care to the Kenyan people.

Your work may consist of basic activities such as observing qualified professionals, diagnosing injuries, working with patients and giving general assistance to the on site physiotherapists and the wider team. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend upon your previous experience and qualifications as well as the needs of the hospital at the time. It is therefore important to remain flexible.

There is also the opportunity to spend free time in the hospital as well, but this is purely optional and we encourage volunteers also to spend some time with their host families and embrace the local culture. The hospital staff are all incredibly friendly and welcome questions from volunteers on all aspects of procedures and hospital life.

You will be picked up from Nairobi airport by a friendly local Frontier representative. You will usually spend a night in the Kenyan capital to recover from your international flight before taking the comfortable coach ride to the coast and Malindi.

If you prefer, you can fly directly to Mombasa and we will arrange airport pick up for you accordingly. In Mombasa the local staff will meet you and introduce you to your host and the local area.

Both your host and local coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly and laid back community.

You will be staying with a friendly host in a homestay, which will allow you truly to experience Kenyan culture. We choose our hosts carefully to ensure that they are able to provide the support and security needed to make your stay comfortable – and fun!
The homestay will usually have a bathroom, living room with TV and kitchen with a fridge and will be close to transport and local shops. You will be made to feel part of the family from the moment you arrive and you will soon find yourself immersed in home and community life.

You host will provide you with two delicious, authentic, home cooked Kenyan meals a day, providing you with a balanced diet including fruit and safe drinking water. Vegetarians are welcome and can easily be catered for.

Kenyan cuisine includes such delicacies as "oysters Mombasa", fish or chicken in coconut, groundnut soup or beef and potato stewand for pudding, bananas cooked in banana leaves.

It is often said that a visit to Kenya without seeing the coast is no visit to Kenya at all. The region is awash with activities ranging from swimming and snorkelling to basking on the brilliant white beaches. Malindi is surrounded by a number of wildlife parks, including Tsavo National Park just three hours away and the Shimba hills game reserve just a couple of kilometres away, where some of the biggest elephants in the world can be found.

There is a diverse and beautiful array of wildlife and breathtaking scenery to marvel at. The lagoons of the southern coast provide an ideal location for snorkelling or you can try bird watching or, for the seriously adventurous, crocodile spotting whilst canoeing in the mangrove swamps. You may even wish to book a day's safari with local providers in the world famous Masai Mara National Park, where you may see, amongst other animals, lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopards.
