WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
You will fly into Kuala Lumpur airport before making your own way by bus to Merapoh where you will be met by local staff. We will help you with details on how to get there yourself.
We recommend that you arrive into Kuala Lumpur the night before the project start date. Your Frontier Volunteer Coordinator can help you make any accommodation and transfer arrangements however these would be at your own cost.
WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?
During the rainforest conservation phase of your adventure, you will be based in Merapoh and will be staying in a dormitory style volunteer house. Rooms will be single sex with 10 beds each and ensuite bathrooms. The rooms will be basic but clean, tidy and comfortable. There are also shops within walking distance of the hostel to satisfy any cravings you may have.
For the second half of your project you will be based at our volunteer guesthouse located in the beautiful Perhentian Islands. You will share a mixed-sex dormitory-style room with your fellow volunteers, fitted with its own ceiling fan. You will also share a bathroom. There is a fully equipped kitchen if you want to cook for yourself one night, and a basic but comfortable lounge for you to relax in during the evenings. WiFi is available at the staff quarters if you want to let those at home know what you’re up to, just a short 5 minute walk away.
WHAT WILL I BE EATING?
In Merapoh you will receive a continental-style breakfast and a packed lunch to take out with you during the day. For dinner, you will be provided with a food allowance which you can spend at local restaurants. Lunch and dinner on your departure day are not included however.
While in the Perhentian Islands you will be provided with a daily food allowance to cover all 3 meals per day. You will also have access to an unlimited supply of water to make sure you stay hydrated. This means that you have the flexibility to eat around your day’s activities. If you want to buy treats such as milkshakes or chocolate bars you are of course welcome to, but will be responsible for covering these costs above. This is a great opportunity to sample the local delicacies, as well as supporting the local economy.
Malaysian food is heavily influenced by a variety of cultures from all over the world; the fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian, Indonesian, Thai and Arabian flavours create a symphony of aromas and exotic tastes. Most of the food will be focused on rice and noodles mixed with vegetables or meat. The multicultural community of Malaysia has many cultural differences however they are all passionate about their cuisine, creating a unique, delicious culinary style.
