WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

This exciting project combines adventure and personal accomplishment in an altogether rewarding experience. Become part of a diverse crew which sails the picturesque Mediterranean Sea helping to change lives and broaden perspectives. The crew consists of a mix of the able-bodied and physically disabled, sailing together in a specially adapted ship. This project will prove to you that anything is possible regardless of a person’s physical capabilities and will undoubtedly change your outlook on life. You will be ‘buddied’ up, usually in able-bodied/physically disabled pairs, to offer support and assistance as and when needed – you will likely find yourself gaining much more from this partnership than you ever expected.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

While on board you will be involved in a range of activities - from helping to navigate and steer the ship to cooking dinner for the hungry crew! When you first arrive on ship you will be put into one of four teams, called ‘Watches’ which take it in turns to be responsible for various tasks on board the  ship. You will also be given a watch card which details exactly what you should be doing at which times during the day. When you are involved in watchkeeping duty you will be helping with steering the ship, keeping a lookout and handling the sails. An experienced watch leader will accompany you on each watch, and will ensure that you are given tasks that suit your individual strengths. Together you will sail the ship! Even when you are not on watch, you’ll definitely be kept busy on and below deck. And don’t worry if you don’t understand the lingo at first, you’ll easily pick it up and become savvy as you take to life on board!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival in the country where your voyage departs, you will make your own way to the dock where the ship will be at anchor using our easy to follow instructions. We can arrange an airport pick-up for you at an extra cost. On arrival at the ship you will be greeted by the crew, who will show you to your bunk and begin your induction and training. You will be provided with detailed instructions prior to your departure so there is no need to worry!

At the end of your voyage, you will disembark the ship in the country specified. Please be aware that all arrangements following the completion of the voyage are your own responsibility.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout the voyage you will be fed and accommodated onboard the tall ship. On board, the cabins have spacious, fixed bunks for you to sleep, and hot showers to rinse off after a hard day on deck. Bathroom facilities are shared with the other volunteers. The ship even has its very own library and well-stocked bar to relax in after a busy day, providing the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow crew.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

While on board you will be cooked for by a professional chef, who will provide you with 3 meals a day. You will feel at home on the ship as you delight at the cakes, biscuits and scones baked for elevenses and afternoon tea, referred to as ‘Smoko’ on board. There will be fresh fruit available to snack on during the day, and even some night rations if you find yourself peckish at night. Needless to say, you’ll definitely be well cared for during your voyage. Each day a member of the crew will help the cook in the preparation and cooking of the food. ‘Mess Duty’ is certainly a busy and rewarding part of life on board!
