China is a big country in so many ways; it is a melting pot for many religions, languages and cuisines, not to mention that it is now the most populated country in the world and at the forefront of modern society. Nowhere else can you get the mix of modern and traditional life that China offers. A society in which old meets new at every turn and where old traditions are swept along on the wave of modern society.

The Frontier-China Intro Week is designed to help integrate travellers into Chinese culture whilst at the same time enabling you to meet other like-minded travellers before setting off on your adventure.

This project offers you a chance to get to know this beautiful Southern province of China in an intimate way, submerging you in the local community and culture.

Whatever plans you have, our cultural awareness week will give you a unique insight into local traditions and a chance to make new friends and travel companions, enabling you to make the most of your time in this incredible part of the world.

You will be based in the heart of Fengyan Village, 140km from Guilin City in Guangxi Province.  It's an amazing region full of traditional Chinese houses and karst mountain scenery.  You will experience traditional Chinese village life with incredible views of the surrounding countryside.

Your project will ensure that you get the most out of your travel through China. Once you’ve arrived and met your fellow travellers, your cultural lessons will begin. To help you settle in you will be given basic language lessons, take part in traditional practices such as paper crafting or calligraphy and educated in the customs of Chinese society. Visits into the village will allow you to meet the locals, make friends and gain an insight to life in Fengyan. Trips to the temple will give you a taste of the history of China and the influences on the development of its national identity. Make sure to have a taste of the local food on offer, and then try your hand at cooking some dishes of your own in culinary classes.

Upon your arrival at Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) you will be picked up by a friendly member of staff who will transfer you to your accommodation in Fengyan. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this beautiful and captivating country.

Throughout your placement you will be living in our volunteer house, a traditional brick-built ornate house of local historical importance that has been recently renovated. Here we create a family atmosphere in which participants from different nationalities live, work and play together with the local staff to ensure everything runs to everyone’s satisfaction. The family atmosphere is important as it helps build mutual trust, respect and understanding between different cultures. The location is important too: it provides the contact of traditional China, with life as it has been for thousands of years. The volunteer house runs as a ’family’ so you will be expected to clean up after yourself and to play your part in keeping the accommodation neat and tidy! Meals are taken together.
Accommodation is in shared bedrooms with 2-6 other people, although upgraded accommodation options are available for couples or families. Rooms in the centre are equipped with fans, hot and cold water and western style toilets. There is a washing machine for laundry (please supply your own washing powder which can be purchased locally) and a bar with a variety of drinks, snacks and food in a unique Chinese atmosphere.

You will be provided with three meals a day – breakfast, lunch and dinner whilst at the centre. These will be Chinese dishes typical of the local area, comprising mainly rice, noodles and vegetables with a little meat.

There are many different varieties of Chinese cooking styles, usually based on the region from which they originate. Many of us will be familiar with elements of Chinese food but you can expect the staples of rice and noodles served with fresh stir-fried vegetables, including regional delicacies like Soya beans, bamboo shoots and Bok Choy (Chinese cabbage).

You won’t be short of things to do on your adventure, but during your free time, activities such as hiking, Chinese Mandarin language lessons, bamboo rafting, tubing down the Li River, hiring bicycles, acupuncture and massage may also be of interest to you.

The region is a pleasant mix of both the old and the new, and throughout the region you’ll be amazed at the natural beauty and peaceful tranquillity of life along the Li River. If you’re willing to venture slightly further afield you can also explore the vibrant city of Guilin taking in the old town, lakes, the river and stopping off at the night markets. After your trip, extended tours of the region or surrounding provinces can be arranged for you including a range of adventure and cultural activities. If you prefer to explore these sites for yourself, our field staff can offer valuable insider tips and guidance to you and your new friends.
