WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The spectacularly diverse country of Bolivia lies in the heart of the South American continent and its capital La Paz is the highest capital city in the world! This project is based around community gardens that have the aim of educating local children about environmental sustainability through hands on experience in the gardens.

The gardens are adjacent to either orphanages or health care centres and the space is used for recreational purposes. The gardens need specialist care and design in order to ensure they are wheel chair friendly and cater to all users.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You will get the chance to help shape the views of the children you work with in relation to environmental issues and teach sustainable agricultural practices. You will provide children with the chance to learn about the processes of planting and harvesting and you can help them to grow their own vegetables and herbs. Use your expertise to guide them through the entire process, from plant pot to dinner plate! It’s important to provide these underprivileged communities with easy access to a safe and relaxing outdoor space.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be picked up from La Paz airport by a friendly local staff member and transported to your accommodation. Once you have had time to rest the local staff will introduce you to your project and the local area. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you settle in and acclimatise and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly and diverse country.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout the duration of your project you will be staying at a centrally located and popular hostel, in a large mixed sex dorm room. The hostel is a social hub where you will have the opportunity to meet other volunteers and travellers. The accommodation will be simple but of course clean and comfortable.

Alternatively you may wish to upgrade your accommodation to a local private apartment situated in the city centre – an exciting chance to live like a true Bolivian! You will have your own ensuite room to relax in after a day volunteering. The apartment option includes a communal area that has TV and wifi access and a shared kitchen and laundry giving you plenty of opportunities to interact with other people living in the fun city of La Paz.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

If staying at the hostel you will be provided with a continental breakfast at the start of the day. All other meals will be your own responsibility. If you opt to upgrade to the private apartment then this project will be entirely self catered. Sourcing food in the capital is relatively easy with typical dishes including rice or potatoes, meat, plantains and eggs. Bolivian food is generally not very spicy but if you like a little extra kick, you may want to try la llajwa – a local spicy chilli and tomato sauce. Based centrally you will be able to venture out into the bustling markets, or enjoy a more relaxed meal in one of the many local restaurants.

HOW WILL I GET TO WORK?

You will be able to travel to your work location using the local bus services – a bargain at around 9p for a single journey!
