WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Sri Lanka Experience is designed for the adventurous traveller with a limited amount of time  who wants to discover the very essence of Sri Lanka, get involved in positive community projects or take an expedition off the beaten track whilst ensuring there is enough time for a relaxed break at the end of it all. With cultural and historical exploration, the chance to visit the must-see sights of this fascinating country, along with lessons in the more traditional everyday aspects of Sri Lankan society, you are sure to derive both knowledge and pleasure from your exploration of this fascinatingly unique country and still have time to kick back and feel the sands between your toes at the end of your stay.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Introduction Week

Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, sample the local cuisine, familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by.  Following this wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.

Volunteering Week

Volunteering options could include helping out on a local community building project, orphanage work, helping out at a women’s shelter, elderly care home or even teaching children at a local school. This will give you the opportunity to really get to know the people and communities of Sri Lanka and give you the satisfaction of being more that just a tourist.

Adventure or Cultural Week

For your third week you will be given the option of taking part in either a cultural immersion or embarking on a trekking adventure. The cultural option will give you the opportunity to explore Sri Lankan culture in more depth, including learning about Buddhism, philosophy and meditation techniques with local monks in a quiet and spiritual environment. You will spend your days visiting temples and markets and very quickly find yourself in touch with the local community way of life, something that will stay with you forever. Alternatively if you would prefer to explore the surrounding countryside by opting for the adventure trek, you will be taken into the mountains of Nuwara Eliya where you will visit the reserve forests of the Hill Country in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and discover the incredible variety of flora and fauna in this unique part of the world.

Beach Week

What better way to reflect on what you have seen and done over the previous weeks than spend your days relaxing on the beach? The only thing required of you is that you relax and enjoy yourself; if you have the energy you can rent a bike and explore your surroundings, if not simply read a book and laze your days away, bathing in the unique atmosphere of Sri Lanka.  You'll find that you leave this amazing country walking a little slower than when you arrived, and all your worries will be far away!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Upon arrival at Colombo Airport you will be greeted by a friendly representative of Frontier-Sri Lanka and driven to your accommodation, where you will be based for the duration of your stay.  Once acclimatised and settled into the Sri Lankan way of life, you will then begin your Sri Lanka Experience.  Please aim to arrive on the Sunday before the first Monday of the month and depart on the Saturday following the conclusion of your project.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout your project you may be staying at either the volunteer house or within a local family homestay, depending upon your programme schedule.

You will live with a carefully selected host with experience of working with volunteers.  Your accommodation will be clean, secure and comfortable and you will be sharing a room with fellow volunteers and will have access to basic facilities.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Three meals a day are included in the programme throughout the week, and two meals a day on weekends. Food will be typical of Sri Lanka's cuisine, mainly consisting of boiled or steamed rice served with curry.  Curries in Sri Lanka are typically made with meat, fish, vegetable and even fruit, and are made using coconut milk.  A typical meal consists of a ‘main curry’, as well as several other curries made with vegetable and lentils and are served with side dishes such as pickles and chutneys.
