The Sri Lanka Discovery is designed for the traveller with a limited amount of time but who wants to explore the very essence of Sri Lanka. With cultural and historical exploration, the chance the visit the must-see sights of this fascinating country, as well as lessons in the more traditional everyday aspects of Sri Lankan society, you are sure to derive both knowledge and pleasure from your exploration of this fascinatingly unique country.

You will be given an interesting and varied timetable of activities including early morning yoga meditation sessions and afternoons scattered with temple visits, language classes and a weird and wonderful array of cultural activities including local dancing and fire walking. Some days could be spent strolling through tea plantations and rice paddies, visiting the local elephant orphanage or taking rustic train journeys through sweeping landscapes, and when it all gets too much there will be plenty of time for sampling the delights of Sri Lanka’s picturesque beaches and the odd jaunt into town for a leisurely shop. Your trip could include an unforgettable river safari or time on a local sea turtle conservation project, before culminating in a tour of the famous mask making factory which should prove a suitable present for loved ones back home.

Upon arrival at Colombo Airport you will be greeted by a representative of Frontier-Sri Lanka and taken to your accommodation, where you will be based for the duration of your stay.  Once acclimatised and settled into the Sri Lankan way of life, you will then begin your journey of discovery and exploration.

Please aim to arrive on the Sunday before your project begins and depart on the Saturday after your project concludes. If you decide to travel outside of these dates then you will be responsible for any associated costs.

Your accommodation will be in a local family homestay, the perfect way for you to learn about the Sri Lankan culture, improve your language skills and experience the Sri Lankan way of life.

You will live with a carefully selected host with experience of working with volunteers. Your accommodation will be clean, secure and comfortable, and you will be sharing a room with fellow volunteers and will have access to basic facilities.

Three meals a day are included in the programme and will be typical of Sri Lanka's cuisine, mainly consisting of boiled or steamed rice served with curry. Curries in Sri Lanka are typically made with meat, fish, vegetable and even fruit, and are made using coconut milk. A typical meal consists of a ‘main curry’, as well as several other curries made with vegetable and lentils and served with side dishes such as pickles and chutneys.
