WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?
The Malawi education system has been consistently affected by economic difficulties and is generally very substandard. As a resulr of the structure of society, girls in particular often lack access to an adequate education. In addition, only 5% of secondary school aged children currently attend school and 60% of all Malawi's children cannot afford to go to school at all as a result of the combined or isolated effects of a range of factors. Although there has been a constant steady increase in access, this has had severe implications for the quality and infrastructure of education, which has largely declined. In addition to this, increased access has been limited to more developed areas, with those living in semi rural and rural communities still lacking basic access. This project is crucial as it involves working with schools in Malawi that offer education to those who can least afford it, including those who live in heavily deprived areas or in regions in which schools are under resourced and overcrowded.
