Malawi Teaching Adventure

Awaken your creativity and initiative as you earn your Frontier TEFL certificate on this teaching project in Malawi – inspire the local children and come away with amazing memories.

Prices from US$1,395

Experience the "warm heart of Africa" when you visit Malawi, a country of benevolent, friendly people, vast expanses of sun drenched wildlife reserves and Rift Valley lakes and plains, including the eponymous Lake Malawi, with its abundance of tiny tropical fish and silky sanded beaches stretching as far as the eye can see. Integrate yourself into the community that you work with and inspire the minds of the children, whilst acquiring a wealth of teaching experience and new skills. Communities lack resources for schools and teachers and without outside help, standards of education will remain critically low; with your commitment, children will receive the learning experience they crave and deserve. Visit Malawi for a rewarding and challenging adventure and return with memories that will last a lifetime.

QUALIFICATIONS

A variety of qualifications are available on many of our projects. For example, BTEC certificates and diplomas on our Group conservation projects and TEFL certificates and BTECs on most of our teaching projects. For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The Malawi education system has been consistently affected by economic difficulties and is generally very substandard. As a resulr of the structure of society, girls in particular often lack access to an adequate education. In addition, only 5% of secondary school aged children currently attend school and 60% of all Malawi's children cannot afford to go to school at all as a result of the combined or isolated effects of a range of factors. Although there has been a constant steady increase in access, this has had severe implications for the quality and infrastructure of education, which has largely declined. In addition to this, increased access has been limited to more developed areas, with those living in semi rural and rural communities still lacking basic access. This project is crucial as it involves working with schools in Malawi that offer education to those who can least afford it, including those who live in heavily deprived areas or in regions in which schools are under resourced and overcrowded.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your work schedule will engage you fully with your pupils and awaken your creativity and initiative. You will benefit in terms of your personal experience by working with these fantastic children and teenagers. Professionally you will be encouraged to formulate ideas and develop your teaching skills and techniques. Volunteers could teach at primary or secondary school, with there being less availablity if you want to teach pre primary children. You will be directly involved with marking pupils' work, preparing homework and assembling innovative and effective lesson plans. As well as this you may also have the opportunity to help with a range of extracurricular activities which will vary extensively depending on your personal skills and interests, whether it is helping direct a school play, organising a choir or helping select a sports team. Whatever you are interested in feel free to take the initiative and get the kids involved and whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from inspiring these underprivileged children whilst enhancing your own skills and experience significantly.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be collected upon arrival at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe by a friendly Frontier representative before being transferred to the project site. Once you have arrived you will be given time to settle in and aclimatise in this friendly, vibrant community. Please be aware that volunteers will be responsible for arranging their own return transfer back to the airport at the end of their placement.  This can be done either by private taxi (circa $240) or by public transport (circa $55). Please take these additional costs into account when planning your project.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Throughout the duration of your stay you will be living in shared dormitory style accommodation at the volunteer house on the shores of Lake Malwi. Based in a small local village the accommodation will be basic but of course clean and comfortable.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

Two meals a day are included in you project fee, breakfast and dinner. These will be simple meals with local produce such as rice and beans, some meat and vegetables, breads and drinks. The cooking is communal, so that some meals will be prepared for you and some you will help prepare, giving you the opportunity to exercise your culinary skills!
