Brazil Teaching & Community

Help to secure the futures of disadvantaged youth in the favelas of Rio, by assisting them to access quality education.

Prices from US$1,045

Brazil, a land of contrasts, spreads itself over almost half of the land mass of South America, making it the continent’s largest country. Resource rich and boasting a strong manufacturing industry, Brazil is wealthy, ranked the tenth largest economy in the world. Despite its great wealth, the benefits are only being reaped by the privileged few and the gap between rich and poor is greater than almost anywhere else in the world and continues to grow at an alarming pace.

The rapid expansion of Brazilian megacities saw property prices increase drastically, making it impossible for a poor family to buy or rent a house downtown.  This expansion forced people to the city fringes to create their own houses and neighbourhoods. This led to the establishment of countless ‘favelas’ (slums or shantytowns). There are an estimated three million people living in favelas in Rio, and while the stereotypes of struggle and violence often ring true, mostly you will find vibrant and tightly knit neighbourhoods occupied by ordinary people trying to improve their lot in life.

Low family incomes mean that children often pitch in and help to bring in money where they can. This often severely or completely limits young people’s ability to access education in Rio. This project aims to provide a low cost education option for families in a low-income area of Rio, in an attempt to break cycles of inter-generational disadvantage and to build the capacity of young people to achieve their future goals.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The favelas are very densely populated and many people live in unsatisfactory living conditions, with high levels of poor nutrition, pollution and crime. Education in Brazil is free and primary level education is compulsory, with most primary schools maintained by the municipal or state authorities. Because of this system, wealthier areas tend to have vastly better schools that provide a higher quality of education than poorer areas, and many children’s learning suffers from a lack of adequate amenities and resources. This in turn results in poorer life and well-being outcomes and fuels a cycle of disadvantage that many communities and young people struggle to break free of. It also means that many young people, boys in particular, are made very vulnerable to be involved with violent gangs and criminal activities.

The project aims to offer an educational environment to young people who lack access to a basic education, and to help them gain skills and motivation required to improve their employment potential, as well as possibly helping them prepare for reintegration into a family and/or society.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

This project gives you an opportunity to work with some of the most disadvantaged young people in Rio, and to help improve their futures by assisting them to access quality education and support where the would otherwise be unable to.  You will usually work within a team of 4-5 other volunteers, under the guidance of two co-ordinators, to teach English and other important disciplins to students between the ages of 3-12 who are at a level of basic or below.  Given the children’s age and language barrier, it is important to also to be creative with lesson planning and teaching, to inspire the children and make a fun and motivational, yet informative environment for them. You will receive much support in-country to help you with this.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

Fly to Rio de Janeiro (GIG), where you'll be picked up by a member of in-country staff and transported to your accommodation. You will receive orientation and local information in your first few days before starting the project.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in a locally owned and run guesthouse located within walking distance to the school.  Sharing a room with other volunteers, students or travellers you will have access to a kitchen, bathroom, and living area.  Laundry and Wi-Fi services are also available.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will receive your breakfast daily, but you will be responsible for preparing your own lunch and dinner. This is a great opportunity to sample local dishes and experience more of Rio. There are also food storage and cooking facilities in the guesthouse that you will have access to, and there are several supermarkets located close by. Approximately USD$50 per week should be sufficient to budget for food, but will vary dependent on individual diets, how often you eat out and how many treats and luxuries you choose to buy!
