For more information on these qualifications, please see the qualifications section of our website or ask your volunteer advisor.

The cycle of poverty that is prevalent in many of Brazil's favelas has resulted in a myriad of health related problems. This project aims to achieve goals through a variety of different, innovative and creative strategies all aimed at supporting the AIDS and DST prevention group through educative campaigns, preservatives distribution, and workshops delivered to a variety of stakeholders in the community. The health promotion campaign is taken onto the streets of the favelas where a stall is set up to dispense help and advice about  AIDS/STD and to distribute free condoms. Besides the work of the prevention group the project has also developed extra classes for children and fabric painting lessons for women in its effort to reach the most vulnerable community members.

You can make a enormous difference to the lives of those who are living with these severe health problems, by joining this incredibly worthwhile project. At the same time, you will be building on skills that are recognised by prospective employers, university tutors, and many others. On top of this, you will be gaining team building skills, confidence, and last but not least having an unforgettable trip abroad.

Whether you are a current or prospective medical student, or simply have a genuine interest in helping deliver healthcare services to deprived communities, this project provides a wide range of exciting and valuable activities and experiences. You may be participating in health awareness campaigns and disease prevention programmes, delivering care to children and their families in specified areas, educating vulnerable community members about STDs and AIDS, assisting at educational talks and workshops to help raise awareness, or even getting involved with the project's blog and website or developing its social networking campaign! This project is all about raising awareness and working with the vulnerable local communities. This really is a once in a life time chance to experience living in Rio, to be involved directly with the provision of practical help for those who truly need it, while at the same time gaining valuable healthcare work experience essential for those intending to pursue a medical career.

You'll fly to Rio de Janeiro, where you'll be collected by a friendly in-country staff member and transferred to your project site providing you arrive on the first or third Sunday of the month.

You will be accommodated in a shared volunteer house. Sharing a room with other volunteers (single sex where possible) you will have access to a kitchen, bathroom, and living area. A laundry service is also available.

A great aspect of this amazing project is that it is self-catering. This is a fun element of travelling away from home and a good opportunity to bond with your fellow travellers. You may also wish to explore local restaurants or try the delicious street food available at the†market stalls - the locals tend to eat late so head out for an evening meal after 9pm if you want to avoid the tourists! Your hostel has a kitchen with cookers, food lockers and refrigerators and there is a 24-hour grocery store one block from the accommodation in Rio. About $50 per week should be sufficient for basic diets but make sure you take a bit extra for treats and luxuries!
