Ecuador is a pocket-sized slice of beautiful South America. Despite its diminutive size, it is bursting with vibrant culture, mesmerising landscapes, exotic tropical wildlife and pristine habitats. Including the all-consuming emerald rainforests of the Amazon, it is rich in rare and endangered species.

Ecuador has a picture-perfect capital painted in pastel colours, alive with cafés, clubs, bars, churches and museums. Markets where friendly locals sell their wares are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of traditional street life. In contrast, the peaceful and serene Andes provide a home for indigenous mountain communities and enigmatic mountain creatures alike. This captivating country contains a culture that is expressed in an abundance of wholesome and delicious cuisine, diverse musical forms and colourful festivals that will enliven your senses. Whilst it is South America's tiniest country, it has everything you could possibly want, including stretches of white sand beaches, expansive plains, steamy jungles and spectacular mountains. All this and more is waiting to be discovered on your spectacular Ecuadorian adventure!

Your internship offers a period of apprenticeship where you can work off-campus to gain valuable experience in a specific career field that combines learning with hands-on activity. This practical learning experience within the workplace provides an invaluable addition to classroom learning and an ideal opportunity to develop your future career. Knowledge of Spanish is required.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

Your internship will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine and is geared towards those who wish to pursue a career within a medical field. This project is best suited to medical students and medical practitioners as the work will involve carrying out medical duties within the hospital. Your internship will give you invaluable preparation for a career in medicine. The placement will allow you to observe medical practices and give you the opportunity to take part in the day-to-day running of a hospital or clinic. Those with determination, enthusiasm, aptitude and the right inclination may be able to assist the doctors and nurses in their duties and gain hands-on experience of administering healthcare to the Ecuadorian people.

Your work may consist of basic healthcare activities such as taking histories, diagnosis, prescription and diagnosis of ailments and giving assistance to the existing medical staff. However, please note that your level of involvement will depend completely upon your own previous experience and qualifications as well as the needs of the hospital at that time. It is therefore important to remain flexible. Those volunteers with little experience could be given the opportunity to get involved with various community outreach programmes such as medical camps, health education, community visits and other relevant activities.

Your programme will run five days a week, Monday to Friday. This will provide you with a comprehensive learning experience whilst still giving plenty of time to see the sights and experience the hustle and bustle of the festivals and night life in and around the area.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You will be collected from the airport by a friendly local staff member and escorted to your accommodation situated in Quito on the slopes of the stunning La Plata mountain range. You will have time to settle in and get acclimatised before receiving orientation to the country, local surroundings and of course your project. Your in-country coordinator will be more than happy to help you with any questions you have and you'll feel at home in no time in this friendly, vibrant community.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will either be staying in a comfortable home stay where you will have the opportunity to experience real Ecuadorian life, or in a local hostel, depending upon the time of your visit. Both accommodation options are located close to the language school and volunteer centre.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

If you are staying at the homestay you will be provided with two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. If you are staying at the hostel this includes breakfast only. Local specialities often found in cafes and restaurants include lemon marinated shrimp, ceviche, which can be made with fish, shellfish or shrimp, and marinated beef steak. Vegetarians are welcome and there is a surprisingly extensive range of dishes on offer for non meat eaters, although this is mainly in the larger towns.

Flights

Flights are not included in our project costs. However, Frontier have partnered with an experienced and professional team of travel experts to help our volunteers find the best flight deals for their trips with Frontier. This travel specialist operates in the tailor-made, long haul multi-stop travel market, arranging complex airfares and transfers for independent travellers. They provide expertise, security and a vast product range along with a Travel Butler service which is a single point of contact and support whilst you are overseas.

We recommend that you obtain a quote using the following contact details rather than book online, as our partner will offer you the most competitive fares. To receive your quote or to seek any advice for your flights, please contact Frontier’s dedicated team of travel experts on 0800 082 9994 (or +44 800 082 9994 outside the UK) or email frontier@flightcentre.co.uk .

Visas

For fast, efficient and up-to-date visa advice please contact our recommended visa consultancy partner:

Depending on your destination country and your country of origin, you might require a visa. Please see the appropriate country consular website for details or contact our affiliate visa consultancy service. Please note that your visa will usually start on the date that you enter the destination country regardless of when it was issued. Please check with the relevant embassy or high commission. If you are purchasing your visa or paying entry/exit fees in-country you will probably need to pay in US Dollars. If you have any questions please consult the relevant embassy or high commission. Please check the visa information regularly, as changes often happen without warning.

Insurance

You'll need to buy appropriate travel insurance covering your participation on the project. You won't be able to go without the right travel insurance so double check to avoid disappointment. Please make sure that you're covered for the whole duration of your trip – from the day you leave the UK to the day you return. It's also best to get your travel insurance at the same time as paying the deposit for your project. Depending on your policy, this will cover you for any unexpected cancellations.

Your insurance should include the following:

  • Medical cover, including medical emergencies and medical evacuations (up to USD$3,000,000 / GBP£2,000,000);
  • Personal liability (up to USD$1,500,000 / GBP£1,000,000);
  • Cancellation and curtailment of your trip (up to the value of your project contribution).

If you are going to be scuba diving you should get coverage for scuba diving up to 30m, including hyperbaric therapy treatment (unlimited). You should consider obtaining insurance to cover you for any additional activities which you plan to do during, before, or after your Frontier project. We recommend that you obtain cover for your baggage and personal effects.
