Ecuador is a pocket-sized slice of beautiful South America. Despite its diminutive size, it is bursting with vibrant culture, mesmerising landscapes, exotic tropical wildlife and pristine habitats. It encompasses the all-consuming emerald Amazon, rich in natural resources and home to a wealth of fascinating creatures.

Ecuador has a picture-perfect capital painted in pastel colours, alive with cafés, clubs, bars, churches and museums. Markets where friendly locals sell their wares are surrounded by the hustle and bustle of traditional street life. In contrast, the peaceful and serene Andes provide a home for indigenous mountain communities and enigmatic mountain creatures alike. This captivating country contains a culture that is expressed in an abundance of wholesome and delicious cuisine, diverse musical forms and colourful festivals that will enliven your senses. Whilst it is one of South America's tiniest countries, it has everything you could possibly want, including stretches of white sand beaches, expansive plains, steamy jungles and spectacular mountains. All this and more is waiting to be discovered on your spectacular Ecuadorian adventure!

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT DO?

The life of the local community is seriously under threat in the developing world. Industrial development and environmental pressures have led to subsistence farming practises being more and more difficult. With the effects of climate change ever-present, the need for education and sustainable practises is greater than ever. On your Frontier expedition you will work with the generation of tomorrow, helping them learn new languages and skills, whilst helping them develop and maintain their delicate way of living. For a truly life-changing experience you will be able to gain knowledge of Spanish to take back with you, wow your friends, and use to further your career.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?

You will be both working and learning on this organic farm which pioneers alternative agriculture techniques and renewable energy sources. You can also assist in eco-tourism and education projects in surrounding communities.  The Organic Farm plays an important role in demonstrating and teaching alternative agricultural techniques and energy sources like biogas, solar power, composting systems, worm culture, water recycling, reforestation and forage systems, permaculture, and general organic farming techniques. The farm now receives many community and student groups who come to learn about these alternatives. Tourism and eco-education are other aspects of the farm. Visitors to the farm can relax, take in the local natural attractions and learn about sustainable agriculture and living practices.

The farm also operates an environmental school for children in the area, providing comprehensive general education along with ecological and sustainable agriculture programmes. Volunteers can on occasion participate in work at the school helping with general activities related to environmental education with the children.

Some of the activities may include:

  • Giving classes in English, art and sport;
  • Artwork, translating, preparation of info and materials for the school;
  • Maintenance work in the environmental school;
  • Nursery work, sowing seeds, filling bags, pricking out;
  • Reforestation work, planting, weeding, mulching, staking, pruning;
  • Creation and maintenance of vegetable gardens;
  • Compost making;
  • Planting, harvesting crops;
  • Help in the preparation of food (especially if you are interested in learning about typical food);
  • Making banana circles;
  • Preparation for groups of visitors (groups of farmers from different parts of the country sometimes stay over night);
  • Help in feeding and caring for the animals;
  • Feeding worms and separating worms from the humus etc.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?

You'll fly into Quito where you'll be met by the friendly in-country staff. After acclimatising and receiving orientation you will be transferred to your project site.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will stay in a comfortable shared volunteer house at the centre. The house has basic facilities and is located close to where you will be working.

WHAT WILL I BE EATING?

You will be provided with three meals a day. Your diet will consist of a variety of nutritious and delicious local dishes. Vegetarians will delight in the varieties of rice and bean combinations that are available!
