Working With Elephants

Working With Elephants

Working with elephants is extremely rewarding. Populations of elephants have declined dramatically due to poaching for their tusks, persecution from locals and habitat loss. In addition, in many countries elephants are ‘domesticated’ and forced to perform tricks. Frontier runs several projects around the world where you can work with elephants and help to protect them, whether that’s by caring for them directly at a sanctuary or by collecting research and data in order to implement protective conservation measures and stop the decline in population numbers.

What is working with elephants like?

Conservation efforts have often been hindered due to factors such as civil unrest, which negatively impacts national parks and other organisations. Working with elephants helps with conservation efforts thus protecting and hopefully increasing their population numbers. Tasks on our projects can include a combination of feeding, exercising and washing the elephants. As well as getting hands on experience with elephants you will work with the community to change perceptions of these beautiful animals. You will learn that each elephant has its own personality which will come in handy when trying to dissolve human-elephant conflicts. In addition to looking after and working with the elephants, you will also be conducting biodiversity surveys and data entries which will help to preserve wild populations.

Why work with elephants with Frontier?

Whilst working with elephants on a Frontier volunteering project you will also be able to immerse yourself in a different culture and experience new and exciting cuisines and activities. You do not need any previous experience to work with elephants, as long as you have a passion for wildlife and travel. All training is provided by experienced and knowledgeable staff who will help you in conducting surveys and help you settle in to life in the field.
