Sloth Sanctuary

Do you want to join Frontier at a sloth sanctuary? Sloths and wild animal sanctuaries offer a home to injured and orphaned animals and a chance for them to be rehabilitated back into the wild. Sloths hang upside down for most of their lifetime and can live up to 40 years. Unfortunately, due to poaching and urbanisation of their habitats, many of these animals end up requiring special attention and help to survive.  Protecting sloths is tremendously important for maintaining Costa Rica’s precious wildlife. Therefore, it is Frontier’s mission to safeguard endangered species in the area and to provide hands on help with sloth sanctuaries.

Why volunteer at a sloth sanctuary?

Frontier’s Costa Rica Animal Rescue Project provides its volunteers with the unique opportunity to prepare food and take care of animals that have been mistreated or have been exposed to the rapid changing landscape of today’s rainforests. Working with local staff, participants will assist our animal santuary where they can familiarise themselves with various species including spider monkeys, kinkajous and coatis. Apart from maintaining the sanctuary for sloths and other animals, volunteers will educate the numerous visitors to the rescue centre. This is a wonderful way to enrich one’s personal knowledge and to contribute to the overall development of the project.

How to apply for a wildlife sanctuary placement

Frontier offers pre-departure support as well as travel advice before and during the project. You can take part from as little as one or two weeks and start dates are all year round. Participating in one of our animal rescue centres allows for a better understanding of the impact of human activity on different species and the way to ensure their survival.  Frontier’s work in conservation makes a significant impact on how one thinks about and perceives the natural world.
