Frontier Group Projects

When you're looking through the website, you'll notice that there are two kinds of project to choose from: the Frontier Group projects, and the Frontier Partner projects.

What is a Frontier Group project?

Frontier Group projects are operated by Frontier in collaboration with long-term partner organisations in five countries across four continents.

These projects are run by Frontier field staff, carefully selected for their experience and expertise, along with highly skilled staff from the partner organisations in the host countries. The projects are exclusive to us and are not available through other providers.

Most Frontier Group projects have research, conservation and development components and most have separate teaching activities. As an international conservation and development agency we are without equal in our field. Three of the Frontier Group projects encompass major, internationally recognised, marine conservation and dive training programmes.

When you join a Frontier Group project, your contribution will go towards developing and sustaining that project. Although we keep all project costs to an absolute minimum, we always ensure that value for money is not achieved by compromising on your health and safety, such as by purchasing inferior quality technical equipment for our diving expeditions, contracting poor quality services for camps or by selecting inappropriate staff for projects.

While working on a Frontier Group project, you may typically be living and working with a group of 4-30 volunteers, all carefully selected by us. Most likely, you will have already met some of them during your project briefing in the UK. This will vary depending on the season, location and nature of the project: for instance, teaching projects will typically utilise smaller volunteer numbers of between 1 and 15.

What can I expect on a Frontier Group project?


On a Frontier Group project, you'll get a dedicated team of young, full time Frontier staff recruited by Frontier head office. The staff will be on hand 24/7 providing mentoring and dive and research training (as appropriate), leading treks and introducing you to life in the field. All the staff are trained and qualified in all the necessary subjects.


Food on camp is simple and nutritious: meals of beans, rice, noodles, pancakes and other staples, along with fruit and vegetables cooked over an open campfire helped by other volunteers.


You'll be off the beaten track, in a remote location, isolated from the tourist or backpacker trails and surrounded by staggering landscapes and pristine environments.


You will live in a simple beach camp or wilderness camp, in local style eco-dwellings with a group of other Frontier volunteers.


You'll be taking part in organised camp activities – anything from sports and games to themed parties, it's up to you!

Other volunteers

You'll be living and working with a group of Frontier volunteers – who have gone through the same selection process as yourself – usually aged between 18 and 30. Group sizes vary between projects but are typically somewhere between 4 and 30.
