Welcome to Cook Islands

"Working with local communities on this beautiful tropical island was not only very fulfilling, I also made some great friends and got to live in paradise on earth!"

Located across 2.2 million km2 of the South Pacific, The Cook Islands are a collection of 15 small islands and atolls, each with unique qualities, named after the British explorer Captain James Cook, who sighted them in 1770. An unspoiled paradise, this exotic location has become increasingly popular since being the location for reality TV shows such as Survivor and Shipwrecked.

Habitats range from cloud forest to montane rainforest, and the country is one of the most biodiverse in the South Pacific. With more than 70 types of living coral and many lagoons, the Cook Islands boast some of the finest dive sites in the world.

The capital, Avarua, lies on the island of Rarotonga, which is the most populous island with just 9,500 inhabitants. It is a mere 32 km in circumference, and has only two bus routes: clockwise and anti-clockwise!

Influenced by ancient Maori culture and the missionaries of the 1800s, Cook Islanders now live in a society which is a harmonious blend of the two, and the country is a fine example of how different cultures can happily coexist.
