Volunteer in Costa Rica

"Working to protect endangered turtles in such a beautiful, unspoiled environment it felt like I was helping to protect my perfect vision of paradise."

With the greatest concentration of biodiversity in the world, Costa Rica is a must for any conservationist. Over 25% of the country is protected in national parks due to the country's progressive policies on environmental protection and sustainable ecotourism. The rainforests, tropical forests, marine areas, and wetlands of Costa Rica are the subject of many university and scientific organisation studies. This "biological crossroads" of the world offers a visitor an unforgettable glimpse of a tropical paradise with over 500,000 species of animal including endangered sea turtles, monkeys and jungle cats, and over 800 species of bird. Seen as an example of political stability in the area, Costa Rica has enjoyed democracy for almost 60 years and is an oasis of calm among its turbulent neighbours.

Why volunteer in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a true global biodiversity hotspot. This makes it the ideal place to volunteer in conservation, wildlife and climate change. Frontier's volunteer camp in Costa Rica is situated right next to the Corcovado nature reserve on the Osa penisula. As such, Frontier can offer a wildlife volunteering experience unlike any other.

Frontier also works with local communities to offer teaching and community initiatives, which are incredibly valued by the schools and students we work with.

What type of volunteering can I undertake in Costa Rica?

Wildlife volunteering in Costa Rica with Frontier is based on our research camp next to the Corcovado nature reserve. Our two most popular projects are the Costa Rica Big Cats, Primates and Turtles placement and the Costa Rica Climate Change placement. Both of these projects work on valuable conservation initiatives in partnership with the Costa Rican government and other environmental NGOs.

For those wanting to get involved with Costa Rica's communities, our Costa Rica Jungle Teaching placement or Costa Rica Sports Coaching placement offer a unique opportunity to experience the warm Costa Rican culture.

“The diversity of projects running here means there is always surveying work to do and the opportunity to try lots of different things. I have gained much valuable field experience across a range of species and it is a privilege to be involved in preserving and protecting this beautiful part of the world. I don't ever want to leave.”- Jessica Dangerfield – Costa Rica Big Cats, Primates & Turtle Conservation
