Volunteer in Belize

"The barrier reef is amazing with so many different species of fish and corals every time you go scuba diving it feels like a whole new experience."

Hidden between Mexico and Guatemala on the Caribbean coast of Central America, Belize is one of the last unspoiled places on earth. The diverse Belize people are dedicated to preserving the country's unique atmosphere and charm. From natural to man-made, marine to inland, historic to cultural there is something for the adventurous and the chilled out.

Belize’s Barrier Reef at 300km is a generous section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, making it one of the largest coral reef systems in the northern hemisphere. Scattered with atolls, ‘drop offs’, fringing and an array of colourful sea creatures it makes a wondrous place to explore. Although it boast 500 species of fish and over 100 coral species, it is believed that only around 10% of all species there have been identified. The main threat to the reef is coral bleaching, which occurs due to anthropogenic impacts as well as natural events like hurricanes. These destroy and weaken the coral beds and make them prone to disease which in turn renders the coral slow, if not unable, to recover.

Why volunteer in Belize?

Frontier's research camp on the picturesque and exclusive north island of Caye Caulker offers a unique experience for marine and coastal conservation. Among untouched coral reefs, a significant population of manatees and an array of other marine life, our volunteers and staff mombers are working on a variety of marine and coastal conservation initiatives in partnership with the Belizean government.

Volunteering in Belize offers the oportunity of getting involved in these initatives and making a lasting impact on the sustainability of this beautiful location.

What type of volunteering placements are available in Belize?

Volunteers who want to SCUBA dive can take part in our Belize Marine Conservation and Diving project, cataloguing marine species and environments while living at our research camp. You can train up to PADI Advanced Open Water while staying on our camp if you're not already qualified.

Our volunteers also undertake a wide range of surveys by snorkel, so if you're not ready for a SCUBA placement yet then our Belize Beach Conservation placement is a perfect way to learn and experience professional marine conservation surveying.

Our newest project in Belize is our Belize Mangrove Conservation placement. Mangroves will be at the frontline of conservation efforts in the coming years, so this is a superb place to get involved with this fascinating and vital area of conservation.

“Spending time in Caye Caulker, getting PADI certified and scuba diving has been an amazing experience. Spending time on the gorgeous reef as well as being able to identify the fish and other wildlife species has been a huge plus. The staff here has made it all worthwhile, they are very supportive and make you feel right at home. All in all this has been a fantastic experience.”- Dave Lau, Belize Marine Conservation & Diving
